- The head gasket leak is very small.

- The cooling system is low on coolant or contains trapped air.
- The test fluid is old or contaminated.
- The test isn't performed correctly.

A positive block test is a very strong indication of an internal engine fault and is rarely a false alarm. However, a negative result doesn't completely rule out a blown head gasket, especially if you still have symptoms such as coolant loss, overheating or persistent white exhaust smoke. In those cases, a compression test or cylinder leak-down test is recommended to confirm the diagnosis.
